Botox

What is Botox?

Botulinum toxin is a neurotoxin that is FDA-approved for strategic placement in the facial muscles. It reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. “Botox” is just a brand name of the most widely known toxin. Therefore, we refer to Botulinum toxin as “Botox.”  There are 4 FDA-approved toxins on the market that are used: Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, and Jeuveau.

Botox is used in muscles to reduce movement, which reduces wrinkles. It is most effective when done as a preventative treatment, but it will help soften lines when performed regularly. The treatment lasts 3-4 months. You can also use toxins to relax areas that pull and cause a downturned mouth, flaring nose, and other abnormalities you might want to fix.

Toxins can also be used more superficially in the skin and subdermal layers to reduce the appearance of large pores, help with the redness of rosacea, and reduce sweating by limiting the action of the sweat glands.
