The After Care Guide To Botox®: How To Improve Your Results
Aging, along with repeated contraction of the facial muscles, can result in the formation of dynamic wrinkles on your face.
Not only do they make you look older than you are, but when left untreated, they can result in more pronounced facial wrinkles and creases. Luckily, Botox® can effectively treat these wrinkles as it targets the root cause of the problem.
However, like any other aesthetic treatment, proper aftercare is crucial to ensure the safety and efficacy of the Botox® treatment.
Read on to know more.
WHAT IS BOTOX®?
Botox® is a popular neurotoxin that was approved by the FDA in 2002 to soften the look of moderate to severe facial wrinkles.
It is derived from a toxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium Botulinum and is a trademark product of Allergan Aesthetics.
IS BOTOX® EFFECTIVE IN TREATING FACIAL WRINKLES?
Botox works by temporarily blocking the nerve signals to the underlying muscles in the treated area, preventing the formation of dynamic wrinkles for a period of 3 to 4 months.
The longevity of results depends on the amount of Botox® injected and how quickly your body metabolizes the toxin.
WHY IS AFTERCARE SO IMPORTANT TO ACHIEVING OPTIMAL RESULTS?
Although the treatment itself is simple and quick (i.e. each injection of Botox® takes only a few minutes), proper aftercare can help:
- Achieve subtle and natural-looking results
- Avoid the spread of toxins in the surrounding areas
- Ensure safety
PROPER AFTERCARE PRACTICE
- Avoid drinking alcohol at least a day after the treatment as it might slow the healing process and increase the risk of swelling at the sites where you received a Botox® injection.
- Stay upright at least for a few hours after you receive Botox® as lying down might result in the spread of the toxin to the surrounding areas and cause them to droop.
- Avoid heavy exercises and strenuous activity for at least a day after the treatment. These might increase the blood circulation in the treated area and cause the spread of toxins to nearby areas.
- Avoid rubbing or massaging the treated area as it might cause the toxin to diffuse into the surrounding skin and tissues.
- Wait for at least a few hours before applying any makeup or mild topical skincare products.
- Avoid direct sun exposure for at least 24 to 48 hours after the treatment, as it might increase the blood flow to the treatment area and result in bruising.
- Once you receive Botox®, make sure to wait for at least a week or two before scheduling any other facial treatment such as other injectables, facials, or massages.
Lastly, Botox® is a minimally invasive procedure that doesn’t require any extensive preparations or downtime. However, choosing the right injector for the treatment and observing good aftercare can further improve the results of this amazing anti-aging treatment.
